Dirt from the sea straight to our lungs
The latest copy of Private Eye, the one a gull stole from me at Whitehaven Station, has an amazing story about the amount of air pollution generated by ocean going liners.

It claims that just one operator, Carnival Corporation, pumps ten times more poisonous sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere than all the 260 million cars in europe. Royal Caribbean, a runner up in the pollution stakes, added a further four times the sulphur dioxide toll of cars.

In addition to the gas pollution, the giant ships' engines also produce huge quantities of particulate matter, including (presumably) the deadly PM2.5.

Is it just a coincidence that Medway has frighteningly high levels of PM2.5 and a high volume of large shipping traffic. I am beginning to wonder if that gull knew more than it was saying!
