In this case they probably did
In my opinion Selcuk, the town I've been staying in, should be one of the great Christian pilgrimage towns. Well if what they say here is true. The official version is that none of the gospels were written by anyone who actually saw any of the events, but in Selcuk it is said that John wrote his gospel sitting on the hill currently occupied by the castle you can see below.

At the time he was in his 90s. The apostle was entrusted to look after the Virgin Mary by Jesus. I have heard from other sources that a couple of the disciples were brothers of Jesus, or half brothers. I guess John was one of these.

He took Mary to Selcuk and they lived here off and on, for the rest of their lives.

Of course, this all sounds like complete nonsense but supporting evidence comes from the fact that one of the early Christian Roman emperors spent a huge amount of money building a vast cathedral here.

The cathedral looked nothing like the ones we have in Europe but more like Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.
