INDEX | March 30, 2025 | Transcript: 0:00 the 0:01 comments around the honesty of this 0:04 council gives me great 0:07 concern Things like Millom Council 0:10 receiving bribe 0:12 money Things like Millom Council 0:15 receiving backhanders We are volunteers 0:18 We don't receive anything 0:21 Therefore I can no longer sit back and 0:23 ignore these comments which are 0:25 bordering on libelous 0:28 insinuation and as such I'm asking the 0:31 clerk to seek legal advice in order to 0:33 redress these unfounded 0:36 accusation Thank you very much council I 0:39 ask the council to consider organising a 0:42 public meeting to discuss the possible 0:43 negative effects of hosting a GDF in our 0:46 area My recollection is that you agreed 0:50 to put this on the agenda for tonight's 0:52 meeting However not only is there no 0:55 reference to this in the minute but 0:57 neither is it on the agenda Well it 0:59 could we don't know yet because there's 1:01 lots more information coming It could be 1:03 the the biggest economic opportunity 1:06 this town has had since Iron August We 1:09 don't know that There's a lot lot of 1:11 information to come through So I don't 1:13 think it would be acceptable for this 1:14 town to have a whole public meeting just 1:16 looking at negative 1:17 effects I'm not against talking about 1:20 GDF to anybody Absolutely not But what I 1:23 am against is when people just want to 1:25 talk about the negative effects There's 1:27 a newsletter been going out um the GDF 1:30 which constantly posted into everyone's 1:33 house It completely presents the GDF 1:37 proposals as positive benefits In fact 1:41 I've been receiving emails constantly 1:43 about from people who support it know 1:46 all the benefits So they think and 1:49 that's all you ever hear You never hear 1:51 one mention of the um um community 1:55 impacts that this would have Now some of 1:58 my um um emails and information that 2:03 what I'm trying to do is balance it How 2:06 can million people make any sort of um 2:09 decision if they actually have no idea 2:11 of the other side once they've had they 2:13 get letters got these presentations 2:16 so-called consultation at um in around 2:20 the town and in the villages but there's 2:22 not one thing mentioned about the impact 2:24 It's always about the you know there 2:26 might be little hints about what's going 2:27 to happen but there is definitely an 2:29 awful lot that this community needs to 2:31 know on such a scale with a residential 2:34 area being used as a thorough affair for 2:37 a GDF tunnel and I don't think anybody 2:41 I think knows apart apart from those who 2:44 look into it and I think this council 2:47 agrees 100% with you and they didn't 2:50 think that that the um the partnership 2:54 was delivering that for the community 2:55 and he's no longer part of that and I'm 2:58 no longer part of that but this is 3:00 really really affecting the well-being 3:02 of people's lives in bank and I know 3:06 which is not not in your you kin people 3:10 living in houses they didn't want to 3:11 live in people living in houses that 3:13 they couldn't sell people not sure 3:15 whether to start businesses in the 3:16 parish people not sure whether to build 3:20 property in the parish it's it's 3:22 happening now it really is had a 3:24 proposal for a for a conversation that 3:28 covers both sides So because I think at 3:32 some stage at some stage we have to have 3:34 that proper debate about about the fact 3:37 what could be the long-term benefits for 3:39 this area as against the shortterm 3:42 problems that it will bring because no 3:44 doubt it will bring problems You 3:46 cannot prove infrastructure to places or 3:49 anything like that without causing 3:51 issues The the policy says because a 3:55 prison will go and employ 400 The policy 3:58 says it will bring 4,000 jobs to the 3:59 area 4:05 That's what he said 4:10 That's what the policy says Whether or 4:13 not whether you want to challenge that 4:15 that's a different argument But that's 4:16 what that's what the government printed 4:18 in their policy is on Now we've got a 4:22 we've got a we've got a motion seconded 4:25 by another councelor to hold a public 4:28 meeting to debate the pros and cons of 4:31 the 4:31 GDF This means those living on or near 4:35 bank head housing estate will be living 4:38 next door to Britain's biggest ever 4:40 building project and the construction 4:43 will go on for at least at least 10 4:45 years Can you imagine that 4:48 but the decision where to site the GDF 4:50 will not be taken until about 2040 That 4:54 means residents have got another 15 4:56 years of fear and dread of not knowing 5:00 Stop you there John because that's 5:01 incorrect 5:03 Not according not according the decision 5:06 of out of where they'll take forward to 5:09 the next stage which the Box stage will 5:12 be taken sorry will be taken by the end 5:15 of 2026 Yeah Now at the end of 2026 that 5:19 means the har 5:21 area could not could be taken out I 5:24 accept that So don't don't say that to 5:27 2040 if it's incorrect 5:31 I accept what you're saying That's wrong 5:33 Sorry isn't it sorry that's wrong 2026 5:35 is when the ball period starts There 5:38 were two sides They'll only There only 5:41 two sides There's only two sides There's 5:44 only they won't do it with three in 5:46 three landing There's only two sides Big 5:49 Copeland and South Cop They're the two 5:50 sides 5:54 Anyway 5:56 bank head residents conducted a survey 5:59 this month to find out whether those who 6:02 would be living alongside GDF supported 6:06 with a high return rate of 68% which is 6:09 pretty good 6:11 78.7% said no for GDF 11.7% said yes and 6:17 5.2% they don't they don't know Already 6:21 one house sale in South has fallen 6:23 through because of the GDF and another 6:24 resident on Bankhead has had to 6:26 significantly reduce the price in order 6:28 to sell So in other words blight is here 6:31 already People are suffering because of 6:34 the potential site was identified in 6:36 2022 Anyone who bought a house in the 6:39 area after that date cannot be eligible 6:42 for 6:42 compensation The residents of Bankhead 6:45 are asking you Milumtown counselors to 6:48 represent their views The threat of 6:50 building a GDF next to where they live 6:53 let alone building one just the threat 6:55 of having one is seriously affecting the 6:58 quality of the life and well-being of a 7:01 significant number of your residents 7:03 I've talked to the local estate 7:05 agents House viewings on bank and estate 7:07 have literally dried up since the 7:10 announcement I think I think the area of 7:12 focus that's been published has been 7:15 appalling in the way that NWS has 7:18 wrapped that area focus around the 7:20 prison and around Bankhead estate for 7:22 land that they will never need or use 7:26 because it is having this this problem I 7:29 don't believe the current 7:31 um the current property protection 7:35 scheme works for the people of Bankhead 7:38 either and I think that needs 7:39 challenging with with NWS because it 7:43 nobody should be out of pocket or being 7:46 in this discussion because that's where 7:48 we are with this We're only still in 7:49 discussion stage about any of this and 7:52 nobody should and I believe that the 7:55 bank head residents are quite right 7:56 their estate is blighted and I 7:58 absolutely support that 8:01 Um so I I've been speaking like I said 8:04 to the local estate agents that for 8:06 feedback on tell me are you getting 8:08 viewings are you not getting viewings 8:10 what are you 8:12 doing so that's where I am I am as a 8:16 council that I think we need to make 8:17 sure that we we tackle that with NWS 8:20 that you know they've produced an area 8:23 of focus that is blighting that estate 8:26 There is no doubt about that 8:30 So be clear or I'm being clear I 8:33 absolutely support everybody on the bank 8:35 head estate that I think your estate 8:36 will be blighted by the way they publish 8:38 this area every focus and I don't 8:40 believe the 8:43 current property protection scheme 8:46 supports you properly in that because 8:50 everything will sell eventually for a 8:51 price but if that price is half the 8:53 value of your h that your house was 8:55 before this announcement then there have 8:58 to be a property collection scheme that 9:00 supports all of that 9:03 Now we'll move to the motion brought to 9:06 council that we mil the town council 9:07 reject the aerial folks being beneficial 9:09 to bank head I need a I need a proposal 9:12 and second for this 9:17 motion councillors do you want to debate 9:19 this what do you want to do you want to 9:21 just move it to a 9:23 [Applause] 9:25 vote just have a quick statement clearly 9:28 it is in no way beneficial to Bank Head 9:31 It's saying the obvious So I'm certainly 9:34 going to support that So I think I could 9:36 just move this to a vote All those in 9:38 agreement with this this 9:44 I think that's how you 9:48 Sorry 9:52 |
