Leaving Chatham
I first went to Millom, in Cumbria, in 1967. My mother pronounced it "a very scruffy little steel town" and said she was glad to leave. But I'm going back to live there at the end of next month.

Yep! I have finally been able to sell my house and buy one in Cumbria. It's only taken six or seven months.

There were no chains, precious few legal complications, no planning difficulties; in fact it was about the simplest transaction you could imagine. And yet it dragged on seemingly interminably.

I will be sorry to leave Chatham, a town I grew to love even though I thought it was a dump when I moved here. I don't have as many friends as I did when I lived in Walthamstow, but I still feel part of the community.

Will Millom be a great place to live or will the locals reject me as a bloody southerner... I'm not sure it makes any difference any more in these internet dominated days, but I will see.
