The importance of being Agnès
I've just watched a couple of films by and about the French film maker Agnès Varda: the Beaches of Varda and Varda by Agnès.

She was pretty much unique amongst the New Wave directors, as a woman and as a person who was far from being a cinephile; she had only seen a dozen films before she made one, she says.

She seems to have got her chance thanks to a recomendation by Godard to his producer, who was looking for people who could make cheap, money making films.

She clearly had a great deal of talent, not least for being in the right place at the right time.
