Running Thames tunnel fire gauntlet
Amazing journey home from work in London tonight. This car fire in the Blackwall Tunnel happened almost in front of me. If this cctv picture had been taken a few seconds earlier you could see my car speeding past.
There had been a terrible queue for the tunnel (south bound, from London to Kent) and I was trapped in almost static traffic for about an hour. When I actually got to the tunnel it was jammed with slow moving traffic. Half way through there was a horrible sight. A car on fire with flames shooting out, seemingly from the front offside wheel arch. The tunnel was getting filled with dense black smoke. There was no going back because I was ahead of dense traffic that could not turn round or back up. I was frightened that the car would explode so I decided to risk it and drove straight through with flames from the car licking the nearside of my car. Fortunately the paint work on my car wasn't damaged, but I have no idea what happened to the dense traffic behind me. According to press reports both sides of the tunnel were shut as a result of the fire which happened at about 9pm.
